Cheese please!
Alright, I need some help from you moms out there. Kaelyn only wants to eat the same few things all of the time....Cheese, bread that is covered in cheese, noodles with cheese, string cheese...I think you get the picture. She will not eat veggies and the only meat she will eat knowingly are chicken nuggets. I have tried all sorts of ways to sneak in veggies and other foods. Out of all of the things i've tried, fried rice and spaghetti (with lots of veggies pureed in it) seems to be all she will eat. I feel bad feeding her the same things everyday and don't feel she is getting all the nutrients she needs. I need ideas...help! Is this a phase? What do you feed your kiddos? Ideas are much appreciated!

Kendra, I know it is really hard, esp when they have preferences for things that are not best nutrient wise. I decided before Eli was born that I wanted to feed him a paleo diet (no wheat, dairy, legumes or sugar), and it was challenging at times, but now he will eat literally anything I put in front of him. Kale, collards, any sort of meat, veggie, you name it. But, if I gave him a choice he would def choose bread bread and more bread. The thing I had to learn is that if you don't give them the choice of that unhealthier option, they won't eat it. Yes, this means they may have a mini-meltdown or refuse to eat the particular meal you are trying to feed them. But when they get truly hungry they will eat. I would rather Eli go without then just keep letting him have unhealthy foods. I know it is easier said than done, esp when you just want them to stop crying and screaming. But she will be better off in the long run. I know several people that try to sneak veggies in to unhealthy food, but that really isn't helping the kid to develop a taste for what's truly good for them. Don't get me wrong, I do have times when I cave and let him have a muffin if we are eating out with friends and I want to avoid a public meltdown. But at home I simply do not keep foods in the house that I do not want him eating. Because I know that if they are there, I will eventually cave and give those to him. Same with me and sweets and why I don't keep them in my house. Anyways, I know this was kind of lengthy, but I am really passionate about food, specifically eating healthy and feeding my kid healthy. But it's still something that is definitely a challenge to keep up, but I notice so many benefits when I do (both for me and for him). I would be happy to ramble on more if you are remotely interested..:)
ReplyDeleteHeather!!! Thanks for your input! Kaelyn used to eat so healthy (when she was about a year old) I swear we ate Talapia and grilled veggies 3 times a week. She got sick right after her dad came home in Sept and her diet changed so much after that. I took her to the DR awhile back just for her regular check up and he said most kids have a phase like this but if it doesn't seem to go away come back in and we can go from there. Ive tried waiting until she gets very hungry but she still wont eat it. Its slowly getting better but I can't handle any more cheese!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI have some friends that have had success with the book "Deceptively Delicious" by Jessica Seinfield. I have a copy that I don't use that I can send to you if you want. If you haven't heard of it it, basically it gives recipes/ways to add healthy food into recipes that most kids will eat. (i.e. spinach in brownies..)
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of it, but would love to check it out!
